It’s our Sovereignty Stupid! -The Illegal Immigration Debate

The Congress shall have Power:To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

–US Constitution Article One, Section Eight

“A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation.”

-Ronald Reagan

On March 9, 1916 the Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa’s took his men across the US border and attacked Columbus, New Mexico, the home of a small garrison. The town was burned and 17 Americans were killed in the raid. This was done in response against the decision made by the US recognize the new Mexican government of his political rival Venustiano Carranza after initially supporting Villa. Villia sought revenge for what as being politically betrayed…  Then Democratic President Wilson (Whom I Dislike immensely and believe was a racist by segregating the post office and other federal government Departments as well as his suppression of civil liberties and for needlessly getting the US involved in the first World War) did his constitutional duty in defense of the country calling out 15,000 militia and stationed them along the U.S. – Mexico border to prevent any more raids and to protect American lives & property. He also sent US Army General Pershing to lead a force of 12,000 soldiers to locate Villa — dead or alive. The expeditionary raid lasted until February 1917 when Pershing was recalled back to the US to prepare for the US entry in the First World War. Even though Pershing was unable to capture or kill Villa it showed that we were a sovereign nation prepared to defend it borders by military force if needed.

In 2010 things are very different we have another Democratic President in the white house but this president is playing politics with our Sovereignty by delaying his promise of deploying a few thousand state guardsman to the border , which was supposed to happen by August 1st and now according to an administrative spokesman wont happen to possibly September or October. The administration’s contempt for the citizens of Arizona was made evident by stating publicly that they were filing a lawsuit against Arizona’s illegal immigration law ( SB1070) to protect citizens of Hispanic descent from being profiled. If you look at attorney general holders filed brief it mentions nothing about profiling it bases its challenge that the state was infringing on the federal governments power under Article One, Section Eight under the powers delegated to congress & the federal Government under the constitution: “To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization”. The Arizona law was very carefully crafted not to profile on the basis of appearance, in fact its almost the exact wording of the Federal Statute that is already in effect. In fact Section Ten of the constitution does not prohibit states from enforcing federal law, this is done every day by the states. (I.E, Interstate Commerce, Drug Enforcement Etc) this administration’s argument falls flat on its face.

Three of my grandparents were immigrants that come over in the 1880’s & 1900’s. but they were legal, they registered went through a thorough physical’s upon arrival(My maternal grandmother was almost refused admission and sent back to Austria/Hungary because she had a case of conjunctivitis.). My paternal grandfather & Great grandfather came over from Ireland as a family and had sponsors and promised not to be a burden on society. we are and always will be a nation of immigrants. I am for LEGAL immigration, if the borders were secure I would be happy to increase the numbers of new immigrants.

Both parties have been at fault and play politics, The Republicans who look the other way on illegal immigration are being supported in a large part by the large agricultural conglomerates, food processing corporations as well as some in the construction industry who do not want tough enforcement and want an underground workforce to keep wages low. The Democrats want the prospect of new voters that are dependent to them for social programs. Who suffers ? the working class rural whites and poor urban African Americans who have been in this country for generations as well as the illegal immigrants  themselves.  Some unions such as the SEIU have been selling out their membership in order to get more due paying members. Proving this fact was a 1997 study by the American Academy of Sciences found that the cheap labor of illegal immigrants caused a 44% decrease in wages among the poorest Americans from 1980 to 1994.

Americans must stand up for their nations sovereignty and laws, this administration and members of both sides of the aisle in congress must be made to honor their oath to defend

Our country. Immigration must be regulated and controlled as well as being fair, which means that those who break the laws by coming into the country illegally should not be given a pass to those who obeyed the law and waited in some cases years to come here legally.

There is a cost to illegal immigration, such as approx 2,100 Americans murdered each year by illegal immigrants as well as the over 200,000 in US jails because of criminal offences they have committed. The cost on social services are also in the billions.   We must know who comes into this country and offer an invitation to share in the American dream not fear those who we don’t know breaking in through the back door. The choice is ours, its time to do something about it  by peaceably making it perfectly clear that we will not tolerate this game by our elected officials anymore.
